These are nostalgic for me. My aunt used to make these on Halloween. She kept them in a large bowl on her dining room table. Here’s the old fashion way of making them.
Old Fashioned Popcorn Balls
3 qts. popped popcorn
2 C. sugar
1 1/2 C. water
1/2 tsp. salt
1/2 C. corn syrup
1 tsp. vanilla
1 tsp. vinegar
Pop your popcorn and separate any unpopped kernals. Set in a large bowl.
In a 3 qt.
saucepan, add all of the ingredients, except the vanilla. Using a candt thermometer, watch the mixture boil to 250°. This should take about 15 minutes. stir occasionally. Remove from heat and add the vanilla. Pour over the popcorn, stir well.
(At this point you could add food coloring to the syrup mixture if you would like to have festive popcorn balls. You could add a drop of orange food coloring for Halloween, or green for Christmas.)
Butter your hands and form into balls. Be careful not to burn your hands, the mixture will be hot in places.
Store in an airtight container. Keeps for about a week at room temp.
